The advanced gamers are the ones who have spent countless amount of hours fighting dragons, saving women and slaughtering monsters with their ergo joystick or favorite gaming mouse. There is something about the game world that keeps us coming back for more and there has been an infinite amount of studies down which measures the effects of video games on our society. These studies pertain to how they encourage violence or discourage it; it also relates to the level of creativity or laziness within our society. People don’t often ask why we even participate in playing these games in the first place. What drives us to beat levels and scale the walls of old, ancient tombs?
Between sociologists and psychologists many of us are finally starting to understand why our own ability to play is very intense. This unlocks the mystery behind this a desire that initiates many of our strange obsessions. The understanding of this and the correct use of it could improve our society in various ways.
Three Unknown Necessities
Gamers will sometimes throw around the word “escapism,” when they are justifying their interest in video games. This doesn’t do justice to the explanation behind it. Escaping from something implies that it is due to something negative, and that we can only enjoy false realities. We are not, always in fact, trying to escape from our own lives. The need for players to engage in this activity consists of human needs.
All of us have our own psychological needs, and we always feel the need to be operating at all times. When we are working or engaging in a social activity, or on the weekends, we always feel as if we should be doing something. Gaming is a perfect target which fulfills this need.
According to many studies, our needs come down to three separate categories. The first of this is the desire to feel as if we should control or master a situation. All of us have our own techniques of doing so and our own reason as to why we should do so. People enjoy feeling successful and as if they are making a steady progress in the category of goals, accomplishments and the amount of knowledge that we hold.
We also feel the desire to be independent of other’s control through our own actions. This is something that contradicts culture, and this unique drive toward autonomy is why many people do not like feeling as if they’re being manipulated. That is why imprisonment is a punishment. That is why games offer free choices for the player.
The last need is our need to feel as if we matter to others, and that we are making a contribution to our society. Those who have altruistic tendencies have higher levels of mental health and less stress. It’s easy how this could relate to playing games with others online but the need to relate can also be met with people who are not even real players – they can connect with other animated players in the game.
Over time, we have been pulled toward certain experiences that make us feel more significant and more related through mental stimulation. Many of our own needs can be fulfilled in various ways through social life, work and sports. Many sociologists are coming to the conclusion that video games are one of the most seductive activities due to the way that it fills our psychological needs.
